Fall is one of the most popular wedding seasons in the Midwest. Schedules are a bit calmer, the air is crisper, the light more golden and nature’s turning colors really start to show off. Each season comes with its own wedding planning tweaks and as we look ahead to fall, we want to share some quick reminders as you button up your fall wedding plans or begin to dream up your plans for 2026. These subtle details and thoughtful additions can make your day feel seamless and your guests extra loved.

Plan Around the Sun

In fall, the sun sets much earlier than in summer. In Chicago, for example, sunset shifts from about 7:30 p.m. in early September to 4:30 p.m. by late November. Build the timeline with this in mind: schedule outdoor ceremonies earlier in the afternoon and plan portraits around golden hour so you get those stunning, glowing photos.

Have a Weather Backup You’ll Love

Fall weather in the Midwest is unpredictable (as is any season, really!). A 70-degree afternoon can turn into a windy, 40-degree evening. Always secure a tent or an indoor backup space if the ceremony, cocktail hour or reception is outside. Heaters, sidewalls and weighted tents are worth the investment to keep guests comfortable if temperatures drop or it rains. We highly, highly recommend checking with your venue to make sure this is an option prior to booking. You also want to make sure you’re happy with your backup plans, just like the original plans.

Choose a Seasonal Menu

Fall weddings give you a chance to elevate the guest experience with flavors they’ve been craving for months (and we’re not just talking pumpkin spice here!). Planners often suggest seasonal options like butternut squash soup shooters, cider-based cocktails or a late-night pie station (with gooey, melty ice cream… yes, please!). Fall food options can be so cozy and indulgent! These little details tie the event to the season without feeling too theme-y.

Prioritize Guest Comfort

Cooler nights call for thoughtful touches that guests notice: cozy blankets on chairs, baskets of hand warmers or hot drink stations with cider or coffee. These small investments help guests feel comfortable, especially during outdoor portions of the evening, and they photograph beautifully.

Refine the Fall Theme

Fall weddings can quickly feel overdone when every detail leans heavily on orange, red and brown. A planner’s expertise is key in creating a look that feels seasonal without being predictable. Start with a muted, rich palette. Deep greens, burgundy, plum and gold all bring warmth and sophistication. These shades complement the natural surroundings without competing with them.

Layer in texture to give the design depth. For example, velvet linens, silk ribbons, hammered metal chargers or dried florals add dimension and nod to the season without screaming “harvest.” Get creative with fall components, like figs on a place setting or tapered candles in warm hues. This helps fill the space without pumpkins and leaves.

While fall weddings in essence may not be as bright as spring or summer, there’s something very romantic about fall and all its attributes. The goal is to honor the season’s cozy, romantic vibe while maintaining an elevated and timeless aesthetic. Thoughtful restraint goes a long way in making a fall wedding feel polished and memorable.
